 Pawling and the Hudson Valley are a food lover’s paradise.  The world-renowned Culinary Institute of America is nearby, and many graduates open restaurants and settle here in the Hudson Valley.  Additionally our thriving farms provide a bounty of frest local produce, meats and dairy products to use in your delicious culinary creations.  Here are a few favorite places to go for foodies visiting Pawling.

 

 

Places to Eat 

McKinney & Doyle Fine Foods Cafe / The Corner Bakery  

     Visitors come from far and wide to dine at this beloved local bakery and cafe that offers fine dining and creative cocktails. Enjoy their creamy lobster risotto with generous chunks of lobster claw and tail, along with crisp fresh asparagus spears, or choose from favorites like filet mignon and avocado egg rolls.  In business since 1986, this is the best place in Pawling for brunch on the weekends too.

      

Main Street Cafe & Deli

    This unassuming little Central American cafe has delicious and authentic Mexican and Central American food, including tacos, burritos, enchiladas, daily specials, soups, fresh fruit smoothies, fried plantains and so much more!  (They even have the best cheeseburgers around!)

Cornerstone Restaurant and Bar

     Chef Harris Mayer is the creative genius behind this new restaurant, featuring  farm-to-table fare in a romantic country setting  Visit their website to check the menu before you go, because it changes daily based on what ingredients are locally available.  You can expect exquisite handmade pastas, wood-fired oven pizzas with dough made from locally grown flour and entees like grilled swordfish and braised short ribs, along with sides like hen of the woods mushrooms.  Even the wines and spirits are sourced from local wineries and distilleries when possible!   Cornerstone is open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday and for brunch on Sundays.

Sunflour Bakery

     This little bakery offers their own unique cakes, cookies and pies, and also features cheddar/sausage biscuits, bagels and breads.  They offer a small but delicious breakfast and lunch menu, featuring items like build-your-own breakfast sandwiches, homemade tomato soup, tuna melts on 5 grain bread, chicken quesadillas, and house-made potato chips.

The Blue Olive

     

     The Blue Olive is a specialty olive oil and vinegar tasting room, featuring a variety of olive oils from around the world, plus infused and fused varieties of olive oils and vinegars  as well.  They also carry gourmet seasalts and other specialty foods. If you love to cook, this place is definitely worth a visit. Check out the blog on their website for some great recipes, too!  They have two other locations in Cold Spring and Eastdale Village, but it all started right here in Pawling.

 

    

Vinny’s Deli & Pasta

     If you love fresh mozzarella and homemade pastas and other Italian dishes, you have to check out Vinny’s Deli.  Vinny’s has been featured on the Food Network for his famous Vinny’s Steak Margherita, which is the most delicious cheesesteak you’ll ever eat, with an Italian twist.  They also carry jars of his signature tomato sauce, Italian cookies, and a variety of take-home meals like eggplant parmesan or lobster ravioli.

    

Pawling Farmer’s Market

     Pawling has a thriving farmer’s market, located on the village green every Saturday from 9 – 1 p.m. during the summer and fall.  Here you will find fresh produce, dairy, eggs and meat from several local farms as well as a variety of artisans selling things like specialty cookies, coffees, honeys, jams, pickles and the like. They also have some craft vendors selling things like apparel and jewelry.  Every market day is like a celebration with live music in the gazebo, cooking demonstrations, and activities for the kiddos.

    

Dykeman Farm

        If you miss the Pawling Farmer’s Market, you can still find some fresh and delicious local produce just up the road from Pawling Village. If you’ve never eaten fresh corn on the cob and tomatoes just hours after they’ve been picked, you’re in for a treat!  Dykeman’s carries a large variety of homegrown vegetables and fruits as well as items like eggs, milk, meat, chees and honey from their partner farms. The farm is a beautiful place to visit, and on the drive there, you can see the Dover Oak on the Appalachian Trail and the house used in the film “The Quiet Place,” as well.

Good Tidings Gift Shop  

     This lovely gift shop has a specialty food section that includes locally produced maple syrup, teas, gourmet jams and sauces, delightful little cooking gadgets, aprons and dish towels.  

Pawling Coffee Roaster  

     If you love coffee, don’t miss a visit to the Pawling Coffee Roaster.  The owner, Willie Needham, imports unique coffee beans from around the world, and roasts every batch himself.  Try a bag of his Peanut Butter Cup coffee, or his Bowtie Reserve.  You can even  have him custom roast your beans to the perfect level of darkness for your taste.

La Guadalupina Mini Mart II 

     If you’re interested in trying some authentic Central American and Mexican cuisine or purchasing brands and products imported from there, visit La Guadulapina Mini Mart !!.  Here you will find lots of interesting flavors of Jarrito’s sodas and a large take-out menu, which includes things like enchiladas, empanadas, fajitas, soups, and salads. 

Beyond Pawling

  

The Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, NY

The world-renowned Culinary Institute of America is located right here in the Hudson Valley, and is one of the reasons that this area has some of the finest dining  in the country.  Just a 40 minute drive from Pawling, the beautiful CIA campus overlooking the Hudson River in Hyde Park is a place no true foodie will want to miss.  They have three spectacular student-run restaurants:  American Bounty (Contemporary and regional dishes inspired by seasonal foods grown in the Hudson Valley), The Bocuse Restaurant (French cuisine), and Ristorante Caterina de’ Medici (Italian Food). They also have a casual eatery without table service called the Apple Pie Bakery Cafe. 

     If you decide to visit one of the three “fine dining” restaurants, make reservations for one of their restaurants well in advance, because they do fill up early.  While you’re visiting their website, you might want to check out the cooking, baking and wine classes.that the CIA offers for foodies and amateur chefs.  These one-day workshops and multi-day boot camps are led by professional chefs and could entice you to spend a few extra days in the Hudson Valley.
